Feed The KidsVolunteers help The Salvation Army serve people every day. Our volunteers are the Army behind the Army. They staff our special events, provide the manpower behind our feeding programs, assist on the scene of disasters and more. We are always looking for great volunteers to join our team. We have programs year-round for which volunteers are needed.

Back to School

The Salvation Army's Back to School Backpack Distribution Program provides backpacks filled with school supplies to all of the children attending schools that have been identified and selected by Milwaukee Public Schools as needing those supplies. Thanks to generous donations to The Salvation Army through WISN 12's Class Act Phone Bank, backpacks and supplies were delivered to 1,500 children last year. Be a part of this year's event by volunteering as part of our Phone Bank, as a Stuff the Bus volunteer, or as part of the unloading and sorting crew the day after the Stuff the Bus event.

Christmas Family Feast

The Salvation Army prepares a traditional family Christmas dinner for over 8.000 people. Volunteers are needed December 23-25 for set-up, cooking and kitchen prep. The success of our Family Feast on Christmas Day is thanks to our army of volunteers.

Coats for Kids

The Salvation Army and Fox 6 collect cold weather coats, hats, scarves, gloves and mittens for children in need. Volunteers sort donated garments by size, hang the clean coats and help with shopping assistance from mid-October to the first week of November.

Feed The Kids

Feed the Kids is a summer meal program designed to meet the needs of children in Milwaukee's poorest neighborhoods. The Salvation Army vans bring lunch meals to neighborhoods, parks and street corners to serve an average of 2,000 lunches each day, Monday - Friday, for 10 weeks each summer.

The meal assembly for the Feed the Kids program is completely volunteer supported. Twenty volunteers are needed Monday - Friday mornings (or until meal assembly is completed). Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups of teens or children require one adult per every four children.

Duties include:  Meal preparation, assembly, light clean-up and room set-up for the next day.

Food Pantry - Milwaukee West Corps

In 2015 our Food Pantry served 11,663 individuals, and we're looking for dedicated volunteers who can help us continue that level of service in 2016 with a commitment of at least 2 days each week and 4 hours per day.

This opportunity is NOT suitable for groups. (If you receive goods & services from our Food Pantry you may not serve in a volunteer capacity)

Working side-by-side with staff from The Salvation Army, Food Pantry volunteers will perform the following duties:

  • Pack bags according to family size
  • Stock shelves
  • Sort food & check for expired food
  • Help unload delivery trucks
  • Maintain a neat work area
  • Break down boxes
  • Assist clients in taking their bags to the car when asked
  • Remove all waste at the end of the day

Volunteers must be able to lift up to 30 lbs, have good communication skills, the willingness to work in a diverse atmosphere and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Background check is required.

Kapco Kids 2 Kids Event

Kapco’s Kids2Kids Christmas in conjunction with 620 WTMJ is a fun way of teaching children the value of giving. Please take the children in your life shopping and allow them to select and purchase toys for kids who are less fortunate in our community.

Through this unique endeavor, tens of thousands of new toys are contributed to the Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations. The toys are ultimately distributed free of charge to children throughout southeastern Wisconsin.

Kids2Kids Christmas not only makes an impact on the children who receive the toys, but helps instill the values of caring and giving in the children who donate the toys.

Prison Toy Program

The Salvation Army donates approximately 5,000 gifts for children of incarcerated parents. Volunteers are needed for packing and shipping. We need volunteers to assist with the data entry and mailing process, toy wrap prep and The Big Wrap and The Big Ship. This program runs from October through mid-November.

Red Kettle Bell Ringers

The Salvation Army needs an army of bell ringers to help raise money for those in need in the Greater Milwaukee area. There are various locations around Milwaukee you can choose from, dates and time vary per locations. We do not ring on Sundays or Thanksgiving Day. Volunteer on your own, with your family, co-workers or friends. You could also become a group organizer at church, place of business or with a service club. Two hours can make a difference!

Please call TJ Anguiano at (414) 302-4300 x2287 to schedule a bell ringing shift or if you have any questions.

Slide The City

Slide the City, a family friendly slip-and-slide water party event returns to Milwaukee on August 18!  As a recipient of a portion of the proceeds, The Salvation Army needs the help of 500 volunteers to make this full-day event a success.  All registered volunteers will receive a voucher good for 1 free slide!

Toy Shop

The Salvation Army, the U.S. Marines, WTMJ 620 and Kapco collect and distribute toys to children in the Greater Milwaukee area. This program allows parents to provide new toys for their children at Christmas. Volunteers donate toys, sort toys by age and gender, and set up and stock tables in preparation for distribution. During distribution week volunteers keep tables stocked and assist parents in choosing toys for their children.

Wisconsin State Fair

For over 20 years, The Salvation Army has been serving free cold water to fairgoers. Volunteers staff our booth and fill cups with water for fairgoers. Last year we gave out over 80,000 cups of water!
